Canada’s 1st hybrid geo-exchange air-source heat pump central plant
The first event of the 2024 ASHRAE season kicks off with a tour to the new Burnaby North Secondary School building. It will accommodate 1,800 students and is approximately 17,670 m2 and includes a Neighbourhood Learning Centre, Childcare Centre, Theatre and Conference Centre.
Instead of wings with long, linear hallways, the school’s classrooms will be arranged in pods – nine six-classroom clusters arranged in a horseshoe shape with the center of the horseshoe designed to function as a mini student commons or breakout space. The arrangement is designed to allow for communities of learning.
The mechanical systems consist of a unique geo-thermal/air-source heat pump hybrid low carbon central heating/cooling plant, custom air-handling units with heat recovery and active chilled beams in the classroom pods. Each area of the school such as shops, gymnasium, science labs, tech education are all provided with separate air-handling systems.
A building automation system is provided for all mechanical equipment throughout the building and all zones are provided with C02 demand control ventilation and occupancy sensors.
